Share 10 tuners and/or design firms that every enthusiast should know about, regardless of where they live. I feel like most sound familiar but I rarely know them.

Alpina, RUF, Brabus, Lingenfelter, Hennessey, Gemballa, Mansory (Didn’t say it had to be for good reasons), AC Schnitzer, Koenig, and last, but very much not least, Shelby, because duh.
Honourable mention to Overfinch. Mainly because they made the official Most British Car Ever™.

The ones that come to mind quickest for me are Roush, Callaway, Lingenfelter, Shelby, Hennessey

Me. I have a sawzall and a literal interpretation of Colin Chapman’s mantra.
Just kidding I don't have a sawzall. I do have a sledgehammer though.

Hennessey - Because every enthusiast should know you will probably get shafted if you deal with them.
![]() 06/26/2016 at 15:48 |

I’d take Mansory before Hennessey. At least you know they’ll actually fuck your car up like they said they would, rather than parting it out and stealing your money.

Wait so you can’t afford a $400k singer? Peasant.
(Jk, I can’t afford one either)

I tried to stay away from the ‘Official’ Manufacturer tuners, I see Mugen as the AMG of Honda
![]() 06/26/2016 at 17:01 |
|
Mugen is more of an exclusive tuning house, like Brabus primarily does Mercedes-Benz's.

|
Hennessey - To stay the hell away from.
Roush - Famed Mustang/Ford tuner, now the only remaining one with Mr. Shelby 6 feet under; you can buy one straight from a dealership with a Ford warranty.
RUF - More than just a tuner, they modify Porsches so much some get brand new VINs and recognized as RUFs instead of Porsches.
Lingenfelter - Former Corvette racer turned tuner who’s built everything from GT Vettes to a 250+ mph C4.
Alpina - Classy BMW tuner and race team, formerly the only ones who built a proper M7. Cars do carry their own warranty and are BMW dealership-friendly.
Brabus - Batshit-insane Mercedes-Benz tuner yet they somehow can still be street-friendly.
Top Secret - Mid Night Club OG; Smokey builds everything from D1 to time attack to top speed missiles. Also, they built a V12 TT Supra because hell yeah.
Mine’s - Focusing more on a balanced setup than depend on outright power nor outrageous bodykits; typically specializing in Skyline GT-Rs. Their famed time attack R34 Skyline GT-R runs only minimal aero parts but can still lap Tsukuba faster than most cars. They were the first to crack the R35 GT-R’s ECU wide open for tuning purposes.
Veilside - Now know more for their outrageous F’n’F body kits but they used to produce some of the fastest 0-300 kph cars in Japan, in fact their R32 GT-R drag car still holds that honor on street tires!
Spoon Sports/Type One - The holy grail of Honda owners; similar to Mine’s in terms of focusing on performance more than looks with great handling cars. They somehow got their hands on a rare NSX-R GT. They can make your little inline-four zing to 10k rpm with no problems too!

If you own a VAG product, APR is a good name to know.

I feel like the basics are: RUF, RWB (because they’re everywhere now), Singer, Gemballa, Novitec, Hamann, Alpina, Brabus, ABT and Spoon (because I love Hondas)
Other honorable mentions are: Tommykaira, Mountune, Prior Design, Overfinch and Oakley Design (no not the shades people)

For turbo cars, COBB is a big one.
![]() 06/26/2016 at 18:15 |

They also tune Porsche Turbos and I think they were working on the 488 GTB. So they do everything from cheap-not cheap at all.

APR (VAG)
RWB (Widebodies)
Veilside (body kits)
Brabus (Benz)
Mine’s (Nissan)
Mugen (Honda)
Hennessey (American/Alcohol)
RUF (fast as fuck porsches)
Alpina (BMW)

In no particular order:
1. Shelby American- because the 750hp Super Snake laughs at your Hellcat
2. Hennessey- because it’s also a whisky
3. Callaway- because they made the Sledgehammer and the Great Big Bertha
4. Ruf- because Gran Turismo couldn’t afford Porsche’s licensing fees
5. Brabus- because who wouldn’t want a tuned Smart ForTwo?
6. Dinan- for the 3 series owner that spends more than an M3 costs to have a car not quite as good or as fast as an M3
7. Lingenfelter- because they made a 600hp suburban
8. Cobb- Because some of us can only afford a Fiesta ST
9. Roush- Because you can buy the Stage 1 appearance package for a couple grand and still technically have a Roush Mustang.
10. Overfinch- because it comes with a drinks cabinet that they will automatically refill for you!

BMW’s M division and Mercedes-AMG used to be brilliant at this, but these days they’re not really external tuners anymore.
But I can think of ten or so others…
Cosworth and Prodrive for rally cars.
Autech and Rinspeed for some silly yet amazing creations.
The not-quite-in-house tuners such as Mugen and Alpina.
RUF and ICON for pure eye candy.
And lastly, my two favourite tuners (this may bend the rules a little).
Lotus
And Porsche
